Why do you need a business coach?
Founding and growing a business is tough and even more so when you do it alone. When I co-founded my first business, I had just completed an MBA which you’d have thought would have taught me everything I needed to know. It didn’t! An MBA covers strategy and marketing and finance; but not in a way that is relevant to a small business.
Most people that I studied with went on to be management consultants in a big business. I did try that initially but hated it. I didn’t like the corporate environment; the lack of support; the majority of senior roles being held by men.
So I decided to start my own business. I thought I knew it all. I didn’t. There was still so much to learn. We did eventually take on a coach, but this was ten years after launch; we had already grown to be a multi million business and wanted to ensure that we had an exit strategy in place. Once we started working with the coach, we began to realise that we had actually made a lot of mistakes which meant that our company did not have the value that we had hoped for.
What does a business coach do?
A business coach helps entrepreneurs and business owners to become clear on their vision, strategy and business model; and then supports them with achieving their goals. They will often combine coaching, mentoring and consulting to help them build strategies for growth as well as providing accountability.

How can a business coach help me grow my business?
A business coach helps you grow by giving you space to reflect and then providing clarity and structure. They will support you in developing a growth mindset as well as with leadership, finance and systems skills; and then provide actionable strategies that hold you accountable.
How much does a business coach cost?
Business coaching can range from £100 to £500+ per hour, depending on experience and specialisation.. Some coaches offer monthly packages, which can range from £500 to £5,000 per month. It is important to evaluate the return you will get on your investment and the coach’s previous experience, as well as how comfortable you feel about working with them.
Do business coaches help small businesses?
Yes — many business coaches specialise in helping small business owners. There are specific challenges that many small business owners have when they start to grow, as they are typically still doing a lot of the day to day work themselves. A business coach can help them to build the foundations for growth with structure which will enable them to grow.
What to expect from a business coach?
Expect clarity, accountability, and honest feedback. In a typical business coaching relationship, you’ll define goals, identify roadblocks, and create a plan of action. Sessions may include strategy discussions, mindset work, and performance reviews. A great coach won't give you all the answers — but they will ask the right questions to help you find them and stay on track.
Can I find a business coach for female entrepreneurs?
Yes — many business coaches specialise in supporting women entrepreneurs and female-led businesses. These coaches often address unique challenges such as confidence, work-life balance, leadership in male-dominated industries, and building supportive networks. A business coach for women can also offer insight into how to grow a brand that aligns with your vision, values and voice.
How much time will I need to commit to the work?
You will only get results from coaching if you allow time to work on your own development and the growth of your business. It is an investment in time and money so it is important to block time in your diary every week.
How long does it take to see results from coaching?
Results from business coaching vary, but many clients see meaningful progress within 3 to 6 months. Short-term wins like improved focus or clarity may come sooner, while long-term gains such as revenue growth or leadership development often take consistent effort over time. The timeline depends on your goals, your coach’s approach, and how actively you implement the strategies.
How do I choose the right business coach?
The best small business coach for you is a very personal decision as what works for one business owner may not work for another. It is important to look for a good business coaching fit. To choose the right business coach, consider:
👉 Coaching style (directive, collaborative, mindset-focused, etc.)

👉 Compatibility with your personality and values
👉 Coaching format (1:1, group, online, hybrid)
👉Testimonials or case studies that show proven results
The best coach for you will challenge and support you in ways that align with your goals and communication style.
