Becoming an Inspirational Leader
Leading Through Growth
Leadership isn’t just about big businesses. It’s important for any business that has actual real humans involved in their success.
Of course some of these humans may be employees; but there are many other important humans that are critical to your business success.
And humans thrive on relationships which is where you come in as a leader.
🙋♀️ Do you have clients or customers? I am guessing they are human
🙋♀️ Do you have suppliers? Probably human
🙋♀️ Do you have business partners/collaborators? Mainly human ( with a bit of AI thrown in)
🙋♀️ Do you work with freelancers? Humans who probably use a lot of AI/tech/automation tools
🙋♀️ Do you outsource any other parts of your business? Some of this may be tech but there is probably still a human making the decisions….
🙋♀️ Do you have employees? Definitely human
🙋♀️ Do you have casual workers? Human too
All of these humans require human communication. And this requires understanding emotional intelligence; an essential quality of all inspirational leaders.
So what are the qualities of an inspirational leader?
💥 They can see the big picture and have a vision and a passion which is contagious
💥 They model desired behaviours and are authentic
💥 They show empathy and inspire confidence
💥 They challenge others to be a better version of themselves
Balanced Leadership
Balance is important in all aspects of leadership and let’s face it as a woman you are an expert in this area. We are very used to the juggling involved in running a business and doing all the other things that we are relied on for - the housekeeper, the mother, the cook, the holiday planner, the carer…..
Achieving balance helps us manage these competing priorities, reducing stress and enhancing our ability to lead effectively. As a balanced woman leader you can set a strong example of how to thrive in both professional and personal spaces. This, in turn, encourages those that you lead to prioritise their own well-being creating healthier workplace cultures for both men and women.
Imposter Syndrome can rear its head, with many women feeling that their success is due to luck rather than skill. Maintaining a balance between ambition and self-compassion helps counter these feelings and build self confidence
And added to that is the balancing act of being many roles within your business, that can be exhausting and emotionally draining. Without balance, it is easy to burn out and feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of responsibilities.
I know what this is like. I launched my first business following failed IVF treatment, assuming that I was not going to become a mum. I worked long hours in that first year and the business grew to £500k; and then my daughter arrived - an unexpected pregnancy and the juggle began!
So what is the answer?
The challenge is to transition from busy business owner to inspirational leader by building a team to support you. The ability to inspire is not necessarily an innate skill, it’s one you can cultivate. There is always room for improvement.
Let me ask you..…as a a leader of your own business
➡️ What have you done well, but more importantly what could you have done better?
➡️ Do you invite feedback?
➡️ Do you admit mistakes and express gratitude?
➡️ Do you lead through collaboration and selflessness?
And how can you improve?
1️⃣ Be Self Aware - being self aware is an essential skill for good leaders. Look to others for inspiration and think about what traits they have that you could make use of in your own leadership?
2️⃣ Take action - every month, chose an area that you want to improve on; whether its communication or handling difficult situations
3️⃣ Daily practice - do one small inspirational thing every day; showing appreciation for the humans in your business - a small gesture or thanks will go a very long way.
We humans love to be appreciated. It reinforces what we are doing well and keeps us motivated BUT don’t wait or put off difficult conversations. The situation will only deteriorate.
Of course it is also important to address any areas where additional support or training is needed.
